Older fuse boxes such as the common wooden backed wylex used a piece of fuse wire to protect against over current i.e. when too much power was drawn like a short circuit. These rewirable fuses are found in older electrical installations from the 60's through to the early 90's. These types of fuseboxes are no longer a good and convienient way to to keep you and your electrics safe.

If you have a fuse box like the one mentioned above you could benefit from an upgrade to a new modern consumer unit (fuse box) with circuit breakers instead of rewireable fuses and an RCD trip to disconnect the supply in the case of a fault.

These rewireable fuses can not be relied upon to turn off power in the event of alot of different faults only over-current faults. For example when mowing you accidently cut through the flex to the mower. Very often the fuse will not blow at the fusebox or plug leaving the damaged cable still live. If you then touch that cable without knowing the dangers you can receive an electric shock which could be fatal.
